Can reviewers suggest edits to Markdown, AsciiDoc or MDX files without knowing the syntax?

Short answer

Yes. In DraftView the reviewer edits the rendered page like a normal document. DraftView converts the change back to the file's own format, then sends it to GitHub as a Suggested Change on the exact lines that changed.

What the reviewer sees

The reviewer sees headings, tables and code blocks as they will look on your docs site. They click into the text and type. They can also leave a comment on any passage.

What your team gets

DraftView splits the edit into small changes and maps each one back to the right lines in the source file. They arrive on the pull request as Suggested Changes, so you accept them with the usual button.

A Markdown file is saved back as Markdown, an MDX file as MDX, and an AsciiDoc file as AsciiDoc. Nothing gets converted to another format.

Formats it understands

Markdown, AsciiDoc and MDX files all load, along with MyST Markdown and Markdoc. Components that cannot be edited safely show as locked blocks instead of being rewritten.

Try it first

Paste any public GitHub pull request into the Try page to see the review view with no login. It is read-only, so nothing is sent to GitHub.

What to know before you rely on this

  • Unusual syntax can come back looking different from the original. Review the suggested change before you accept it.
  • Reviewers without GitHub need a teammate to push their suggestions. See the answer on reviewing without a GitHub account.
  • DraftView is for review and small edits. It is not a writing environment for new pages.

Common questions

Will it reformat my whole file?
It maps each change back to the lines the reviewer touched. Check the suggested change on the pull request before you accept it, especially for unusual syntax.
Does it work on files that are not in a pull request?
Yes. Doc reviews let reviewers work on files on a branch, and the result becomes one pull request.
Can a visitor to my docs site suggest an edit?
Yes. Point your Edit this page link at DraftView and visitors can edit in the browser, then submit a pull request.
