How do I get legal or a client to sign off on docs that live in Git?

Short answer

Show them the rendered document, let them comment and suggest changes, and record their approval against a specific version. In DraftView an approver signs off on the review, and the sign-off is stored in an append-only record you can export.

Pick the version they are approving

Sign-off only means something if everyone agrees on what was signed. For a pull request, that is the PR at its current head. For a doc review, DraftView pins the exact commit when the review starts, and every reviewer sees that same text.

Give them a page, not a repository

Invite legal or the client as a member with a role, or send a review link. They see the rendered document and can leave comments or edits. They do not need a GitHub account or any Git knowledge.

Record the decision

Members with the approver role can sign off. Each sign-off adds a row to an append-only record with who, when and which item. You can export the record per review.

Your team handles the changes the approver asked for in the same review, so the trail from comment to fix stays in one place.

Where e-signature fits

A sign-off record shows that a named person reviewed and approved a version of a document. It is not an electronic signature on a contract.

For a statement of work or any legally binding agreement, keep using your e-signature tool. Use DraftView to get the content right and approved first, then send the approved version for signature.

What to know before you rely on this

  • DraftView does not produce legally binding electronic signatures.
  • Doc review sign-off is still being built. Today, sign-off is recorded on pull request reviews, and doc reviews keep a full event log and exportable record.
  • Check with your own legal team about what evidence they need.

Common questions

Can a client approve work done by an agency?
Yes. Invite the client as an approver or share a review link. Their feedback and approval stay on the review.
Can they approve part of a document?
Reviewers resolve their own comments and decide on suggested edits one by one. Sign-off applies to the review as a whole.
What happens if the file changes after approval?
A doc review stays pinned to the commit it started from. On a pull request, a new push is a new revision for reviewers to check.
